Interview With Meat Katie

Where did the name Meat Katie originate from? Any underlying message there?

A Blue film.

As you were growing up, did you receive any sort of formal musical training? If so, was there a particular instrument you favored?

I play bass guitar, have done from when I was a teen, when I used to play in bands, but no formal training.

How would you describe your current sound as a producer and how does it differ, if any, from what you play as a dj?

I make and play deep rollin tech-funk that is made up of house, breaks & techno with lots of percussion bouncing around, music you can shout your head off to.

For the artist hopefuls, how long had you been producing before you signed your first major release?

I was lucky, my first production got signed to Wall of Sound, "Trickshot" under the name Ceasefire which I done with a guy called Derrick Dalarge & Jason o' brian who now records as the Dub Pistols with Barry Ashworth.

You have had several notable releases on labels such as Bedrock Breaks, SAW, Blue Black, and Kingsize...to name a few. What sort of projects are you working on at the moment...or have in the pipeline set for this year?

There is lots of things in the pipeline, Roland Clark is working on a vocal for myself & Elite Force, I've just remixed the new Unkle 12", I'm doing some bits with Lee Coombs, Danny Howells, Hybrid, Christian J, Dylan Rhymes, I have some other things on the go, but I don't want to jinx them, so I will keep my mouth shut for the moment.

You have also collaborated with several heavy hitting artists in the past such as Rennie Pilgrem, Dylan Rhymes, and Lee Coombs. As you work with other artists, do you find yourself picking up new ideas for other projects, walking away with enhanced production skills, or just the satisfaction of creating something inspirational to others...or all the above/other?

Yes I'm always keen to learn new tricks/ideas, collabs are great for that.

Is it safe to anticipate a mix compilation from Meat Katie in the near future? Maybe a GU mix or an Australian based EQ Balance series?

Something special is being talked about at present, but nothing is confirmed just yet.

New upcoming artists seem to be approaching the spotlight more rapidly than ever. What artists have you seen/heard recently that listeners should be on the lookout for? Any collaborative efforts in line with these new artists?

Christian J & Klaus "Heavyweight" hill are worth a shout as both are knocking up fantastic tunes.

Your music experience extends beyond djing and electronic music. Tell us a little bit about your band experience and how it has contributed to your production efforts...if it has at all.

I think working in a band has helped me with the collabs, being understanding and not trying to have it all my own way, knowing what ever happens it's a joint effort, good or bad.

What are the top 5 tunes that remain in your box at the moment?

Doubleblack "Pipedream" Thrust
MK & CJ "Move Me" cdr
Coombs & Pilgrem "untitled" cdr
Elite Force "No Turning Back" w9y
Rick o' Neil "Come Into My House" (MK + EF mix) RPO Traxx

A hand full of older tunes from the 80's and upward are on a remix come-back. Are there any particular favorites that would interest you taking on a remix?

No, I will leave that to Tiga or Peaches, or someone like that.

Thank you to Meat Katie for taking the time to answer these questions and to Dennis Wheeler for setting up the interview.
